Yunus shows clear preference for a political party: Jamaat
Yunus should have discussed this with other parties and shared his views after returning home, thinks Jamaat
Chief Adviser Prof Mohammad Yunus has shown a clear preference for a certain political party during his meeting with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in London on Friday.
“We think such a preference has undermined his (Yunus) impartiality. It would have been appropriate for him to discuss this with other political parties upon his return to the country and express his opinion on the matter,” Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said on Saturday.
While addressing a press conference, the Jamaat chief, in his reaction to the outcome of the Yunus-Tarique meeting, said that as the chief of the interim government, issuing a joint statement with a political party is not morally appropriate.
Shafiqur said confusion has arisen among the people whether the upcoming general election will be held in a free, fair and impartial manner under the management of the Yunus-led government.
Claiming that there are many active political parties in Bangladesh, the Jamaat leader said that taking a decision on the country’s overall political issue based on a meeting with a political party cannot be considered correct.
“We urge the government to ensure a level playing field, upholding its neutrality to hold the national election in a credible manner and accelerate the reform and trial process,” he said.
Shafiqur said his party believes that the chief adviser would clarify his stance by dispelling the confusion arisen among the people over his neutrality ahead of the upcoming general election.
Yunus and Tarique during a meeting held in London on Friday decided that the next general election is likely to be held on 12 February next year.
