San Sebastian Sets Opening & Closing Night Films
27 Nights, the latest film from Uruguayan filmmaker Daniel Hendler, will open this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival, while Winter of the Crow, by the Polish director Kasia Adamik, will serve as the closing night gala screening
Hendler directs and stars in 27 Nights. The film features actress Marilú Marini as an 80-year-old millionaire forced into a psychiatric clinic by her daughters. Hendler has another film in the San Sebastian programme this year titled A Loose End, which screens in the festival’s Horizontes Latinos section following its debut in the Spotlight section at Venice.
Winter of the Crow, a co-production between Poland, the United Kingdom, and Luxembourg, is a thriller set in the Cold War during the 80s. The film stars British actress Leslie Manville. Adamik also co-wrote this film based on a short story by Olga Tokarczuk, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2018. The story follows the tale of a British professor who arrives in Poland to give a lecture in December 1981, just as martial law is coming into force.
San Sebastian will this year run from 19-27 September. Jennifer Lawrence will be feted with an honorary Donostia Award for career achievement alongside Pedro Almodóvar’s Longtime producer, Esther García.
Other titles set to screen at the festival include the directorial debut from Juliette Binoche, IN-I In Motion, a non-fiction film that interrogates In-I, the hybrid dance and theatre show produced by the actress in 2007 with the dancer and choreographer Akram Khan.
