Supreme Court Lawyer Mugged in Mohammadpur
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Mohammad Rafiq Ahmed of Mohammadpur Police Station told Daily Bangladesh Time, “This incident is very unfortunate. It is shocking that such an attack took place on a lawyer.
Many people consider Mohammadpur to be a breeding ground for muggers and criminals. While it appears calm and pleasant during the day, some areas turn into hotspots for mugging and criminal activity at night. Those unfortunate enough to fall victim to these criminals often lose everything they have. A similar incident occurred again last night.
At around 10:20 p.m., on the main road in front of Mohammadpur Residential Model School and College — near Mirpur Road — a lawyer was robbed of his money, mobile phone, and important belongings. The victim, Advocate Mohammad Mamun Chowdhury, is a Supreme Court lawyer and also the Chairman of the Department of Law and Justice at The People’s University of Bangladesh.
According to Advocate Mamun Chowdhury, after finishing his university class, he was walking along the footpath near the school gate when three young men got off a rickshaw and approached him. One of them grabbed him and said threateningly, “Don’t say a word — one more word and it will be your last.”
He continued, “I had around 8,000 taka in my shirt pocket, which I was keeping to buy medicine. They snatched that money and then asked, ‘Where’s your mobile?’ I told them I didn’t have it. Another one said, ‘Check his bag!’ and they grabbed my bag. Inside that jute bag were 60,000 taka — my salary that I had withdrawn from the bank the previous day. When they saw the mobile phone inside, they tried to take the whole bag. As I resisted, one of them hit me on the head with the blunt side of a machete. I tried to hold onto the bag, but they managed to snatch it away. While fleeing, they waved the machete at me and said, ‘If you scream, we’ll kill you!’”
Advocate Mamun Chowdhury added, “I never imagined such a thing would happen to me. I have been walking on this road for years — the Ministry of Defence offices are just across the street. I couldn’t believe that in such a public place, three men could overpower me like this. As a lawyer, I plead for justice in court every day — now I am left wondering, where do I seek justice for myself? It’s tragic. I have already filed a case, and I hope the criminals will be brought to justice soon.”
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Mohammad Rafiq Ahmed of Mohammadpur Police Station told Daily Bangladesh Time, “This incident is very unfortunate. It is shocking that such an attack took place on a lawyer. We have officially registered the complaint, collected CCTV footage from the area, and begun an investigation. The suspects will be identified and arrested soon.”
Present at the police station during the filing of the case were students of the Department of Law and Justice at The People’s University of Bangladesh and several members of the media.
