“As Miss Universe, My Responsibility Toward Society Is Greater” – Anika Alam
I learned so much there that it’s hard to explain briefly. But one moment stands out—during my interview, when the judges asked questions, everyone showed deep interest in Bangladesh: our culture, our people, our heritage. Seeing such genuine curiosity about my country truly moved me.
Anika Alam carried the red and green flag of Bangladesh at Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico. A professional makeup artist by trade, she is currently engaged in social work focusing on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger, alongside advocacy for women’s empowerment. In an exclusive interview with Jugantor, she opened up about her journey, aspirations, and responsibilities.
Q: How did it feel to represent Bangladesh on the Miss Universe stage?
Anika Alam: It’s honestly hard to put into words. This is the most prestigious beauty pageant in the world, and being able to represent my country on that platform is the greatest honor. Carrying Bangladesh to the world stage filled me with immense pride.
Q: How was your overall journey in the competition?
Anika Alam: Opportunities and experiences like this come once in a lifetime. I learned so much there that it’s hard to explain briefly. But one moment stands out—during my interview, when the judges asked questions, everyone showed deep interest in Bangladesh: our culture, our people, our heritage. Seeing such genuine curiosity about my country truly moved me.
Q: Many Miss Universe contestants use their title to become social workers, entrepreneurs, politicians, or media professionals. How do you want to use yours?
Anika Alam: I want to continue my work with the Zero Hunger campaign. At the same time, I’m committed to women’s empowerment. As a makeup artist, I want to train underprivileged girls in this profession, so they can become self-reliant. I also hope to grow further as a professional model.
Q: Do you think artists have a social responsibility?
Anika Alam: Absolutely. In fact, I believe it’s not just artists—every person has a duty toward society. But as someone who carries the Miss Universe title, I feel my responsibility is greater. I want to use this platform to bring the best possible outcomes for my community.
Q: Why did you choose to work specifically on ‘Zero Hunger’?
Anika Alam: It is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations. My dream is that not a single person in Bangladesh goes without food. That’s why I’ve dedicated myself to this cause, and I want to inspire many others to join in this mission.
Q: What are your future plans regarding women’s empowerment?
Anika Alam: I have many plans, but the first is to train underprivileged girls through makeup courses. This will help them enter the profession and establish themselves in society with dignity and independence.
