Senior Journalist Zahurul Islam Zahir Takes Charge as Convenor of Gournadi Press Club

In an effort to unite journalists in Gournadi, Barishal, five separate journalist organizations have been dissolved to form a unified organization—Gournadi Press Club. On Tuesday, senior journalist Zahurul Islam Zahir, former president of the press club and Gournadi correspondent for Dainik Protidiner Bangladesh and The Muslim Times, officially took charge as the convenor of the newly formed club.The unification of Gournadi’s journalists has sparked enthusiasm and excitement among the journalists as well as the general public.
It is reported that during a fascist regime, influential leaders affiliated with fascist-supporting political parties intentionally created division among the journalists of Gournadi. During that period, six separate organizations were formed, including Gournadi Press Club, Upazila Press Club, Reporters Unity, and Upazila Reporters Unity.
After the "July Revolution" of 2024 and specifically after August 5, senior journalist Zahurul Islam Zahir, former chairman of Gournadi BRDB and former president of the Gournadi Press Club, initiated a unification process. He organized a joint meeting with journalists from the five separate organizations working in Gournadi at a restaurant in the Gournadi bus stand area.
In the meeting, Zahir urged all journalists of the upazila to unite for the sake of professional dignity. Member of Parliament for Barishal-1 constituency, Zahir Uddin Swapon, also joined the unification initiative. In the presence of the journalists, a unanimous decision was made to dissolve all existing organizations and form one unified body. A 31-member convening committee was established.Previously, Md. Gias Uddin Mia and Khandaker Moniruzzaman served as convenors for three months each.
Zahir Uddin Swapon, MP for Barishal-1, has been appointed as the chief advisor of the press club. On Tuesday, senior journalist Zahurul Islam Zahir officially assumed the role of convenor of Gournadi Press Club.
Zahir stated that a complete voter list will be prepared by December, and a full committee will be formed through an election.
