In a statement issued during its 93rd session in Marrakech on Wednesday, the Assembly emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation and information-sharing between INTERPOL, its member states, and law-enforcement agencies worldwide.
The triennial conference, which was last held in 2023 in Kigali in Rwanda, is coming to the Oceania region for the first time. It has previously taken place in the UK, the US, Malaysia, Denmark and Canada. The conference serves as a catalyst for change, uniting leaders, advocates and organisations to drive meaningful progress on the issues that matter most to girls, women, and gender diverse people.
As per tradition, the first head of state to speak was Brazil’s president. This practice began in 1955 when Brazil voluntarily offered to deliver the opening address. Usually, the United States (as the host country) speaks second. At Tuesday’s high-level general debate, speeches were delivered by U.S. President Donald Trump, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, French President Emmanuel Macron, along with 16 other world leaders. Each country’s leader is allotted 15 minutes, though in practice their speeches usually run longer.
Farid Abdulkadir, Head of Delegation in Pakistan, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), said that since late June, Pakistan has endured one of the most punishing monsoon seasons in recent memory. Torrential rains had triggered widespread flooding, landslides, and destruction across nearly every province: from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgit–Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, with over one million people directly affected and over two million indirectly affected.
In a rare move, Israel publicly admitted to killing al-Sharif. On X, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) described al-Sharif as a “terrorist posing as a journalist for Al Jazeera,” adding that he “was the head of a Hamas terrorist cell and advanced rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and IDF troops.”
